A great way to make communication more ground-breaking is through creating an open-source web-based forum. And, this is why wave developers are being sought upon as a way to help create and develop more killer applications most especially for Wave.

In fact, it has already begun. The Google Wave Team aims to continue developing more powerful and better extensions for running forums in wave. And, to take it to the next level, the team aspires to incorporate tested features from forums into a robot which in effect can make Google Wave as the ultimate platform for forum-based discussions.

The objective is, improve Wave through incorporating forum which can encourage users to utilize it for other purposes instead of sticking to which is traditional.

And, according to David Crane, an external Wave developer working on the Debatewise Extension, there are three specific areas which need further developing, namely…

(a)    Objective: To enable people go hand in hand around a theme of their choice and help find waves of interest. Tasks: Group waves around disciplines.

(b)   Objective: To encourage and reward participation in conversations. Tasks: Stir in the levels of participation rates and privileges and the likes.

(c)    Objective: To establish mechanisms so people can decide who to invoke or ignore. Tasks: List of all user messages and their classification in the community.

Python, Java and Javascript developers, QA testers and anyone with interest in forum software are invited to join. The project is structured by Debatewise.org, a non-profit debating web site which aims to be the Wikipedia of debate. For those who are interested, contact dh.crane@googlewave.com.

Probably the most requested feature of Google Wave has been delivered yesterday. It is simply to get email notification when a Wave changes.

It is quite easy to start to use. Simply select the dropdown button on your inbox, select notifications. Then you have the option to select how often you want the notifications.

The email you then will get looks like the following.

One feature missing feature is that it is not possible to look for updates in the inbox. I might only be interested in updates in Wave, when a search term is updated. So I only get updates when Waves with the word SAP or the tag SAP is updated.

I currently use Google Wave Notifier to get updates, when a Wave is changing. The program gives instant notifications when your inbox changes. It is quite useful. But it is probably not a solution for non-it savvy users how don’t want to install all kinds of addons.

Hi Everyone! We’re presenting you a simple 5-part video tutorial showing a sample in creating a google wave gadget using flex (Flash Builder Beta as the IDE and Flex 4 as the Compiler). The application is of the same with the common flash actionscript file having a counter button that increments the result number by 1 and a reset button that resets the result number back to 0. Any of the participants that will click the buttons will be able to update the state having them with the same result on their screen. Apologies if you find the video not clear enough and so as the speaker or mispronounced some words but hopefully you’ll be able to follow and at least this will give you a head start.

The 1st part of the video is some sort of a short introduction to flex showing how to call or place given components from flex through typing the codes or dragging the component in the design view.

Reminders: You always need the wave-as-client as the library of the flex application and make sure to have the wave-as-client.js placed in the same folder of the release build. In creating a gadget.xml, just make sure you’ll be able to apply an extension code to the url of your flex swf file application to avoid caching to prevent problems in updating and testing the application on the wave.

We already covered the WaveBoarder application, which is a helper application to Google Wave. The gadget makes it easier to navigate in Wave with the iphone and mean you only have one place where you can work with it. The gadget is available on itunes.

The video I created can be seen bellow.

I feel the application has been user friendly. If that is because HTML version for the iphone has been improved. But the whole experience works much better now. So it could actually be an application you can use for something useful.

The Shiny Wave has a blog on Google Wave helping Scientist Collaborate. I thought that going to some to the gadgets mention there could be interesting. The gadget I found the most interesting is Graphy by Elliott Slaughter.

The gadget allows you to create a graph between different elements and see how it relates to each other. This is really useful when you are describing something and needs to get a connection between some entities.

Sorry for the missing sound,  will make the sound on the next videos.

Using Wave to create the graph could is interesting because there could be different interpretations between on how the connections are. With Wave it is possible to make them connect to each other.

The userinterface is not the most best, because for every keystroke the gadget is recreated. This makes it quite slow when generating when working with the gadget. A way to workaround this is to remove the instruction line in the beginning.

This robot/gadget show cases how it is  possible to make a connection between the two types.

I got my Asus Eee PC with a 10″ 1024×600 screen two weeks ago. It would be very useful to have Google Wave on this computer. The first thing I did was to attach the computer to a large external screen and then run the Wave. It worked pretty well because you could see everything.

The big advantage of a laptop computer is that it can be brought anywhere. Besides, its light and not bulky. Well, mine has a really long battery life that can last for a full working day if it set to standby mode when it is not being used. This also works well if you are going to write or note important points in meetings or events.

I used the notebook to tweet, write notes and work in wave.

If you don’t change any of the windows settings you cannot see much like shown on the following image.

It is fairly easy to work in wave with the Eee. The screen is not big, but it is possible to make the Wave panel larger to write well. There is still a large part in the window, which is taken by the header and form fields. The Eee has a mode where it is possible to mimic a larger screen and thereby roll the windows so you only see the wave.

Firefox also has to be in Full screen. This way you get more space to write on and it also removes the bar in the window screen.

The problem with the Wave exists if you start adding images or gadgets. They can often not fit into the small 600 pixels in height. I tried to use the Gravity Gadget on the computer and it was very difficult to get a full overview of the process because the screen was to small.

Typing on it is another problem I noticed in the beginning because I thought  it will be slow. There was too much JavaScript for the Atom processor. It only seems to have been improved I can now write as fast as I want.

The off-line wave mode does also work pretty well. What you type will get synced in with the wave when you get back on-line. This is also interesting if you want to save the battery by stopping the Wifi connection or to any conference where the Internet connection is unstable.

I see it is possible to use wave also on small notebooks like mine. They can handle a much richer environment than mobile phones.

“There will always be two questions on something; is it good or bad? Opposite attracts as some people say it but the question always is: which is better?”

The internet world has been talking about the next big thing in the digital world since the start of its introduction to developers worldwide. What else would that be but Google Wave. The news about its  first appearance to public were spread in seconds and many people felt the excitement to experience the newest way of real-time communication. Some said it is big, some said no, but will google wave become the next thing to replace traditional email? Who knows until everybody has got the feel of it.

In line with all of these, blogs, websites, forums, and even time magazine has spread the words about Google Wave. News have been coming in and out of the picture and in this post, thoughts from some individuals will be read.

The IT Pro has given a four-page long review about Google Wave (GW). It included the idea that initially; the service offered by GW may seem a bit confusing, just as some doubted it is a replacement for any traditional email. However, IT pro has concluded that GW can provide great benefits to businesses. “It is easy to see how appealing the Google Wave can be, especially for those who work on projects with multiple people at different locations.”

Robert Scoble, a celebrity blogger on the other hand is somewhat more skeptical. He wrote at scobleizer.com that the services are “vastly over-hyped, and as people start using it, they will realize that it brings the worst of email and IM together: unproductive (uproduktivitet). “ Scoble pointed out that it is totally confusing to see a number of people write to a real time page,  he told new Wave users to add only their closest friends as contacts. He explains, “I do not know where I should start with, and keeping up with this real-time noise is not much like e-mail, which is like tennis (strike a ball at a time), but it is more like trying to dodge tennis balls from a machine gun.”

Another blogger named Adam Turner may not also have some positive notes about Google Wave. He wrote that he has already IM, email and Google Docs and having  Google Wave may be difficult to fit into the picture. He included: “This is the classic example of a solution looking for a problem. This does not mean that it (the service ed.) are worthless, or that I dislike it, but it’s just because it will take time for people to get around the Wave on Google and find out the best way to spend it on among other things.”

The beta tester Sean Lew’s experience with Google Wave was “refreshing”, but he doubts that all the cool features is not enough to make the Wave a hit. He said: “Google is perhaps big and powerful, but I am not convinced that it is strong enough to change the traditional e-mail.” On the other hand, Zmogo blogger writes that although the wave may not be as impressive at the moment, particularly because of the limited number of users, Google Wave can still be the next big hit. Louis Gray, another blogger has also pointed out that the potentials are certainly there, although it also must turn to the new way of communication. “Wave is a very interesting platform, and I would bet that after the first wave of curiosity, will the normal form of conversations and information exchanges take over, so this first ‘point’ is perhaps the exception rather than the rule,” writes he.

The CTO and Co-Founder of Woobius who is Daniel Tenner has also given his ideas about Google Wave in his post about What Problem does Google Wave Solve? He said; “Many experts and tech gurus had described Google Wave as a disappointment. They end up comparing it as social media since they didn’t seem to know what Wave is actually for. Google  wave is not the next Twitter nor the next facebook but possibly change Instant Messengers in some circumstances in the near future.”

The release of Google Wave to developers and other social media experts first is partly Google’s error since Wave is not mainly designed for them but for the world of business and corparation as a tool to solve work problems. Google Calls it an “online tool for real-time communication and collaboration”. Well, Daniel Tenner’s team at Woobius at first glance saw Google Wave as an awesome tool to get rid with the email problems at their work. And what are the email problems that google wave can solve? Tenner explained that the main problem is the “spams” that are caused by unnecessary signing up to many services (Google Docs, Etherpad, Skitch, screen sharing tools, or any number of collaborative whiteboard applications) that resulted to automated notifications and etc. Google Wave has resolved certain email issues such as “collaborating on a piece of text”, “adding new people to the conversation”, “keeping added people added”, “attaching Files over 10MB”, “lost attachments”, “multiple conversation branches”, “correcting small glitches in typos”, and “email-like platform turning into IM-like platform” (and vice-versa). Tenner has then concluded that Google Wave was basically created for corporate environment as a tool in getting things done easy and without mistakes. And as far as those go, it’s an excellent tool, even at this very early stage.

These are just few comments and news about Google’s Masterpiece –“Wave”. Well, many might have different opinions about Google Wave but what we can hope for is that, developers who first tried it can identify different areas of improvement so that Google Wave will manifest more benefits and will solve more problems in today’s digital world of communication.

When you are a participant in a conference, Wave can make sense for you. I have some ideas regarding conference attendance.

For less crowded events like some presentations, you may find that you can create your notes live. Wave will allow you to create your own notes for each session, so other participants in the wave can see what is being written or if it is an interesting presentation. If it is possible to create good notes from your sessions you will be able to learn more. Other persons wanting to attend the same session at a later stage can see if it is interesting.

There will be some issues regarding rights of the content. I could imagine that some presenters do not like to see their content on the web, but it will hopefully be very few. The alternative is to blog about each session, where the same information can be disclosed. With wave you don’t need to have the content as super well formatted but you can let it be more in draft state. In this way you have your content the same way as other places.

Wave can also be used for less formal events, like finding places to go for dinner/lunch or just to start a networking session with some like minded persons. With wave, this will be easier if you can catch people’s attentions to the wave where you want to attract an audience about something.

Twitter is quite popular at conferences, where you are able to follow the streams. I have found, that I can only focus on one thing, what the speaker is saying or tweeting about what they have said. When I start writing my tweet, I lose focus on the speech and cannot see what is being said. It is also difficult to follow the twitter stream, to find interesting points. I read the other day that speakers also should follow the twitter streams, so they could respond in realtime to the event. I don’t think I’m able to speak and read from the twitter stream at the same time. Maybe wave will be easier to follow for a presenter, since it is just in one place all information exists. And you can see what people are writing at the moment.

I will try waving at the upcoming SAP Teched conference, to test if it is a useful way to work. You can follow the tag: sapteched09 and see the result of the experiment. A problem with the Waving is that not all participants have a Wave account, so it will only be a small subset who will use Wave.

The last challenge is that my new Asus Eee is very slow, when I’m working in Wave. I don’t think the small atom processer can run all the JavaScript. I’m not sure on how often it is sending data. Maybe the Wave client could be tweaked so wave can only sent data in every 5 characters, if the computer was to slow.

I created the SAP Enterprise service robot, which is described in the blog. I wanted to give you an explanation on how this robot was implemented.

I have therefore created a 5 minutes screen capture, showing what is going on and what the moveable parts are. Probably 5 minutes is a little too short, but if you have anything, which you want me to explain, I will do it. I hope you find it interesting.

I’m not proud of using crafted XML documents, instead of sending SOAP documents. But it was the only way that I could find to call SOAP web services from Appengine. If you have any suggestions to how I can avoid this, please let me know.
