A great way to make communication more ground-breaking is through creating an open-source web-based forum. And, this is why wave developers are being sought upon as a way to help create and develop more killer applications most especially for Wave.

In fact, it has already begun. The Google Wave Team aims to continue developing more powerful and better extensions for running forums in wave. And, to take it to the next level, the team aspires to incorporate tested features from forums into a robot which in effect can make Google Wave as the ultimate platform for forum-based discussions.

The objective is, improve Wave through incorporating forum which can encourage users to utilize it for other purposes instead of sticking to which is traditional.

And, according to David Crane, an external Wave developer working on the Debatewise Extension, there are three specific areas which need further developing, namely…

(a) Objective: To enable people go hand in hand around a theme of their choice and help find waves of interest. Tasks: Group waves around disciplines.

(b) Objective: To encourage and reward participation in conversations. Tasks: Stir in the levels of participation rates and privileges and the likes.

(c) Objective: To establish mechanisms so people can decide who to invoke or ignore. Tasks: List of all user messages and their classification in the community.

Python, Java and Javascript developers, QA testers and anyone with interest in forum software are invited to join. The project is structured by Debatewise.org, a non-profit debating web site which aims to be the Wikipedia of debate. For those who are interested, contact dh.crane@googlewave.com.

At Google IO, I talked with several of the companies presenting there. It was quite interesting to see what the different companies put into their Wave efforts. But, is there a business model around building wave applications. If there is on way to make money in the future on the app, it might not be interesting to start developing applications for wave.

There were the big players – SAP, Novell, Salesforce and Oracle. SAP and Novell both presented their “Wave” servers. Obviously, there is a model for providing servers/services to organizations with a higher level of group control or/and enterprise scalability. The services interact with Google and other Wave servers, but are being run on independent servers.

SAP is already providing Streamserve to their customers as an on demand solution that they can easily implement already. Novell Pulse is still not available and is waiting for more development, thought it looked like their service was pretty cool. I was standing beside Novell and saw what their application is capable of doing. ProcessOne was doing the same by creating a Wave server.

Salesforce and Oracle showed off how Wave could assist their customers interact differently with their platform. For them, Wave is just another platform they support to get more customers to user their services. I’m not sure if they charge extra for their services or it is just a free add on. If they can get some more customers based on the Wave platform then, it is a success. But they must be making the money on their other subscription service.

For Prezi’s presentation, they used Wave to just get another platform to show their presentations. With the help of the wave interaction Prezi will be able to get more exposure and other channels to deliver their cool presentations. This model is probably one that most of the companies at the stand used – to get more people to use their service, by offering Wave as a spate client for their services.

My goal is to build applications that we can charge for, or some premium model. We will be targeting the Apps Marketplace where we have an easy way to offer applications to organizations, and we have a pretty easy log in concept to make everything work. I’m really happy with the release of Wave for Google Apps and the Apps marketplace. It means that there will be a place where we can sell our services. In the first term it will be Caseish.com, but there will be other.

Then there was the student project processWave.org, a Gravity clone, which seemed to have taken a lot of improvements and was working pretty slick. But they did not seem like they were going to take any future actions in commercialize their projects.

We are also wandering to create a few games. Just to try out how it is possible to create games in Wave. We should provide some free games, and then the ideal would be programs with some more features. But without an appstore it will be more difficult to use and distribute the games. We have wandered to use Adsense on our games, but have no idea on it will be worth the while. So I guess we will have to wait for a free version or make a paid app using a robot to add the access control.

What is your view on how to monetize the way Google Wave applications are built?

Google I/O 2010 has remarkably served as a good platform for new application developers working on collaboration tools and software. And, I am very pleased with how everything turned out both for MasteringWave and especially Caseish.
After Caseish was launched, it has received good reviews and news coverage which is really a great sign for me [...]

Google I/O 2010 has remarkably served as a good platform for new application developers working on collaboration tools and software. And, I am very pleased with how everything turned out both for MasteringWave and especially Caseish.

After Caseish was launched, it has received good reviews and news coverage which is really a great sign for me that people are becoming aware and interested with it.

Caseish has been featured in “Dansker promoverer Wave-baseret system,” an article post in ComputerWorld.dk

Another post in ReadWriteWeb also featured Caseish as one of the latest 5 Services that Leverage Google Wave.

I hope to see more write ups and reviews about this product in the future.

For the Google Wave meetup we in Copenhagen today, we did all the planning regarding the meeting in a wave. It did not work out. It was only three participants how showed up to the meetup, and it was all the presenters or organizers. I hope that it is just the weather, but think there could also be some part of the wave usage that could be different.

We did some mistakes that I will probably do again, but at least try to avoid.

First we did a survey about when to have the meeting, and we had to change the time because it did not fit with the schedule of university where the event should be held.

I also asked people to contribute and participate in create an agenda. Most people are not interested in giving presentations, but instead what to learn. Which is why the meeting is taking place.

We did not send out reminder mails. It would probably be a good idea to send out reminder mails to all the involved participants in the wave a day or two before. Many people may have mute the wave so they don’t see it as a reminder that an upcoming event is taking place.

Did not have a clear RSVP where people could indicate that they were going to attend.

So next time we are going to plan a meetup. We will create an agenda and a place a head of time and then add people to sign up to the event. I if they want then people can contribute to the agenda if they want more topics.

I will also send an email to all persons how have indicated that they would like to come or are coming. That will for me sometimes make it easier to attend.

Planning meetings might be something that will be much easier to do in 12sprints, since you have a much more controlled environment for creating decisions.

I talked with Jacques Holst about planning, and he said the web never had been a one communication strategy. I think we have to remember that there are many other forms of communication to look for.

Jacob Andersen will show how to create a python robot that can convert a wave to a pdf file.

Daniel Graversen (me) will talk how to make gadgets using Flex. I just need to create a presentation.

I hope that we can get somebody to tell how wave is useful in their industry.

The event will take place Wednesday the 3 of February. The room number will be availed on Wednesday on the Wave.

I got a tweet from Marilyn Pratt about @CrisisCamp was using Google Wave to aid in their organization with regards to their effort in Haiti.

CrisisCamp is using both Wikis and Google Wave for their effort in collaborating with their support. CrisisCamp is about helping NGOs with supporting their technology needs.

Their main wave can be found on this link. The Goal with the Wave is:

Join camps, activities, people and learning in this effort to support Haiti. And do this synchronously and in real time.

It seems that Google Wave will provide a better helping. But it is fair more accessable than a wiki, and you can start with editing with out the hassle of wikis.

I sure hope their efforts will help save lives in Haiti.

There as been a taskboard gadget for Google Wave for a long time that we talked about in the Wave calendars first day. The idea with this gadget was to make it simple to promote ideas between users and make then able to manage the project.

On MasteringWave we have produced a new Taskboard gadget, created in flex where there is spend some more time on the interface to make it look wave-y. The gadget lets you assign users to tasks and view which tasks are unassigned.

I have created a small video demonstrating how the gadget works.

To get access to the link, join our newsletter on the right menu then you will get a link to the gadget. (I need to make some tweeks before I can send it out but it should happen within a few days).

The taskboard gadget fits very well with our other scrum gadget the Wave Planning poker gadget. Do you think there are any tools missing to create a better scrum experience.
